We Love
Our Things

COMMUNITY EVENT

In Module 5, we have been learning so much about our things and all the things that humans create and make.

Now we know where our things can go when we are done and how to respect the things we have. Something we learned is that an old thing can be a new thing to someone else!

The Toy Swap

Module 5: Community Event

Host an event at the school where children can swap an old toy for a like-new toy. To prevent tears and increase patience, keep this event simple. Simple = Success

  • Limit the swap to 1 toy per child but invite siblings to join!

  • Set a time, and when each child arrives, place the toys together on a table.

  • As each child (and siblings) arrive, hand them a number.

  • Give the children and families an activity to do for 20 minutes while teachers set up the Toy Swap Table (ice cream, outside play time, another guest activity).

  • When it’s time to begin the swap, have each child participating draw a number out of a hat.

No need to add a round of trading or even a time for snacks while swapping. You will find that the children are so excited to go home with something like-new that the usual "sharing" and "boredom" and "mind-changing" and "hunger" isn't even a factor at this event.

It is a good idea to have a couple extra toys so that the last few numbers pulled still have a selection of toys to choose from.

This is a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the year with Earth Friends!
